The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, His Excellency Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, accompanied by a delegation he leads, was warmly welcomed in Ankara, Turkey, following an official invitation from his Turkish counterpart, His Excellency Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Third Round of Somalia-Ethiopia Talks

The President’s visit primarily focuses on participating in the third round of talks between Somalia and Ethiopia, being held in Ankara. These discussions are particularly centered on the agreement signed on January 1, 2024, between Ethiopia and the Somaliland administration, which allocated a 20KM stretch of Somalia’s waters along the Saylac coast to Ethiopia.

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has strongly opposed this agreement, deeming it a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The FGS has firmly reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Somalia’s unity and declared that any agreements compromising its territorial rights are unacceptable.

Reinforcing Somalia’s Position

The Ankara talks underscore Somalia’s strong stance in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The government remains resolute in prioritizing national unity and ensuring the protection of the country’s natural resources, advocating for peaceful and cooperative solutions through dialogue.

The President Leading Somalia’s Diplomatic Efforts

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is spearheading efforts to strengthen regional diplomacy and ensure Somalia’s active participation in international discussions. His visit to Ankara is a clear demonstration of the FGS’s commitment to achieving stability and fostering collaboration within the Horn of Africa while addressing pressing challenges.
