The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, His Excellency Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, attended the flag-raising ceremony on the night of July 1st, marking the 64th anniversary of the independence of the Southern Regions and the union of the Northern and Southern Regions of the Republic of Somalia.
The July 1st celebration took place at the Banadir Regional Administration Headquarters, where the flag of the independence of the Southern Regions and the Union of the Two Regions was raised. This ceremony, which holds great significance for the Somali people, commemorates the day the southern regions of Somalia gained independence from Italian colonial rule in 1960 and united with the northern regions, which also gained independence from British colonial rule in the same year. This commemoration symbolizes the long struggle of the Somali people to achieve freedom and unity, as well as the progress and peace they aspire to today.
